Welcome, candidates!

You may find the following information helpful when considering whether to join Pi Tau Sigma. Please note that membership is by invitation.

You are always encouraged to attend one of our informational meetings before deciding whether to join Pi Tau Sigma, since the information below is provided only as a guideline and may not always be up to date.

Initiation Policies and Requirements

** Note: The dates listed below are for the Spring 2006 semester, but the initiation requirements are basically the same from year to year. **

  1. You must pick up a candidate pack from the Pi Tau Sigma office between Thursday, March 2nd and Friday, March 3 rd. This pack will contain the chapter and society constitution, an initiation requirement checklist, and your brass key. The brass key and materials remain property of Pi Tau Sigma until initiates become members.
  2. You must polish the brass Pi Tau Sigma key and adorn it with the society colors: murrey and azure. The polishing can be done by hand or with power tools. (This is the mechanical engineering honor society, after all.)
  3. You must dress in formal attire (shirts, ties, etc.) between 8am-5pm during the week of April 3-7. You must also wear a homemade nametag with your attire.
  4. You must receive the following signatures in your thermodynamics or controls textbook:
    • All officers of Pi Tau Sigma;
    • 3 active members of Pi Tau Sigma (this excludes officers);
    • All candidates;
    • At least 20 professors in the mechanical engineering department. GTAs do not count, but the ME undergraduate advisor counts as a professor. Prof. Johnson (our advisor) and Prof. Ball (our department head) are required.

    A note on the signatures: this is intended as a way for you to meet some professors outside of the normal class setting.

  5. You must participate in the following activities:
    • Regularly attend Pi Tau Sigma meetings
    • One fundraiser (pizza sale, golf tournament, etc.)
    • One faculty-student event (fireside chats, etc.)
    • Assist with the senior composite
  6. You must write a short essay (one page) on why you would like to join Pi Tau Sigma and a short but humorous poem on your experiences in mechanical engineering at Virginia Tech.
  7. You must be prepared for a test on Pi Tau Sigma history as well as mechanical engineering knowledge. This test will be given as part of the initiation ceremony.
  8. 8.You must pay a one-time initiation fee of $50.00. This pays for registration into the national society.

    These requirements are not meant to be especially stressful. You have approximately 8 weeks to complete these tasks, and it is well advised to begin your work, especially collecting signatures, early. All of these tasks are expected to be completed by initiation (end of April).

    If you have any questions about these requirements, please contact the Recruiting officer.

    Good luck!!!
